Mr Trick & Wrongtom: Show #62 (Dec.’09)

ClashSteel-artWith Trick suddenly bed ridden with a vicious case of the sniffles, the original plan for a decade rundown show was scuppered. Fortunately all was not lost as Santa’s little helper dropped by in the shape of our irregular regular Ed Zed who suggested a last minute ’spiky dread’ special. Cue a deluge of dub and reggae music made by punks and new wavers, all giving their unique twist to the scruffy skank.

It may sound like a one trick pony of a show but we can assure you that this is no less varied than our usual fare. From the mechanical skank of Basement 5 to the Danish distortion drenched Sods, Ed & Tom prove that punks knew a thing or two about the one drop, the three foot skank and doing the rocksteady.

Plus there’s more of the same idle chit chat, erroneous facts (replace “Thomas Dolby” with “Howard Jones” when listening) and shameless self promotion, not to mention possibly one of the best band names we’ve aired yet in the shape of I-Jog and the Tracksuits.

Tracklisting:
Basement 5 “Immigrant: Dub”
Dangerous Girls “Dangerous Girls”
Red Beat “More Or Less Cut”
The Flesheaters “Cry Baby Killer”
The Clash “Crooked Beat”
The Ruts “Love In Vain”
In2xs “Too Many”
The Sods “Copenhagen”
Return Of The Panthers “Calling Captain Nemo”
I-Jog and the Tracksuits “Worrying Man”

Soundbed -- Wrongtom Meets The Rockers “Lost In The Supermarket” from Shatter The Hotel.

erotica-artIt has come to our attention of late that our show’s live slot (Wednesdays, 10pm if you didn’t realise yet) mean that we compete with the TV vampire soft porn of True Blood. So, to combat this, Tom steps up this week with a variety soft porn-related selections covering anything from Emmanuelle’s more interesting moments (well, the soundtrack anyway) to the squeaky-bed conga-fest that is “Erotica: The Rhythms Of Love”.

Oh and Trick plays some music too… of no bearing to porn whatsoever. Hence the rather brutal opening from the Big Game Hunter himself, Mr Dibbs, newies from Lou Rhodes, The Irrepressibles and Beach House and the fine raw rock of Grifters -- a band Jack White was clearly listening to back in the early nineties…

Go!

Tracklisting:

Mr Dibbs “Live at 1st Ave”
Pablo & Fay “Bedroom Mazurka”
Grifters “Skin Man Palace”
Pierre Bachelet & Herve Roy “Emmanuelle Theme (Up-tempo Instrumental)”
Pierre Bachelet & Herve Roy “Opium Den” (excerpt)
Pierre Bachelet & Herve Roy “Rape Sequence” (excerpt)
The Irrepressibles “In Your Eyes”
Funkineven ft Fatima “Kleer”
Beach House “Used To Be”
Lou Rhodes “There For The Taking”
soundbites from “Erotica: The Rhythms Of Love”
Prince & The Revolution “Lady Cab Driver”

And the soundbed, with the emphasis on ‘bed’ is courtesy of Donna Summer who Loves To Love You Baby

Despite the urge to post some soft porn to accompany the main theme of this week’s show, we plumped instead for this mighty dub version of Bedroom Mazurka -- as sublime as dub ever gets…

iheartdubstep-artFinally! Apologies all -- getting this show podcast has been a task akin to the Homer’s Odyssey, leading me to wonder if the spirits somewhere detected that this show May Contain Dubstep.

Yes, dubstep.

Alarmingly it was Tom’s turn this week to break out his inner Grumpy Old Man, with an inspired rant about the new Fourtet Joy Orbison remix which bears striking similarities to the broken beat scene led by Victor Duplaix among others. With a gentle track from Laura Veirs and a nod to the ‘Ardkore days with Lennie De Ice it amounts to the usual smorgasbord of wide focus music selection. You love it. Go get some.

Tracklisting:
J:Kenzo “Conqueror”
Coventry Automatics “Look But Don’t Touch”
Fourtet “Love cry (Joy Orbison Remix)”
Nepa “You Know What You’re Supposed To Do”
Victor Duplaix “Manhood”
Laura Veirs “Where Are You Driving?”
Lennie De Ice “We Are I.E.”
Lorez Alexandria “Baltimore Oriole”
Emika “Drop The Other (Scuba RMX)”

Soundbed this week was a more obscure release on Domino: side A of Cinema Recorded Music Library’s “P Beretta”…

Featured video this week is not so much a video but a reference point. In the show I (Trick) mention Oxford ‘Ardkore as a fine example of the homespun rave tracks that briefly flooded indie dance stores of note all around the Orbital. Well, some kind soul has posted it onto YouTube, thereby saving me the trouble… Enjoy!

CruiseIt had to happen eventually. In fact I’m amazed it didn’t happen sooner. Yes, 59 shows in and FINALLY me and Tom both brought in the same track to air. What was the track? Jammer’s acid-friendly new one, “Party Animal”, which takes its place alongside the ever-reliable Maytals, Mr Chop reworking Pete Rock, Fulgeance on the remix and Les Crane being… well… flat out strange if I’m honest…

Remember, if you like what you hear then do us a favour and click here to launch our page on iTunes to leave a comment and a rating… (and many thanks in advance if you do or have already!)

Tracklisting:
Aufgang -- “Barok (Fulgeance RMX)”
The Afro Blues Quintet Plus One “Moses”
Jammer -- “Party Animal”
Les Crane “A Different Drummer”
(in the background while Trick arses around with his Dub Siren iPhone app) Niney The Observer -- Travelling Version
Toots & The Maytals “Pee Pee Cluck Cluck”
Mr Chop feat. CL Smooth “Straighten It Out”
The Private I’s “Transgression Dub And The Professor In Action”
Courtney Tidwell “Sun and Moon (The Hands Off Cuba RMX)”

Mr Beatnick on soundbed duties with “The 4th Day”

Herbie Mann SleevefaceThis week its back to a dynamic (ha!) duo, armed with music under our respective arms that takes in anything from fake Finnish punk bands to ropey reggae recorder covers. As if that’s not enough, we drop some fine malt blues from the man Screaming Jay and some of the earliest dancehall tracks that were only available as 78s back in the day. Oh, and Uffie and Molly Hatchet… but we won’t dwell on that.

Go get some!

Tracklisting:
Herbie Mann “Kabuki Rock”
Hot Toddy “I Feel Love”
Screaming Jay Hawkins “She Put The Whamee On Me”
Sonny Knight “But Officer”
Willie Royal “General Alarm”
Molly Hatchet “One Man’s Pleasure”
(about all you could take of) Uffie “Pop The Glock (Mirwais Pop Remix)”
The Fuckers “Sexy Roy Orbison”
We The People “Break Down”
Count Lasher and his Calypso Quintet “Dalvey Girl”

Soundbed: the entire “Good Is Good” album by Om.

MoogAKA “Moog & Willies”. With typical technical finesse and the professional presenting abilities of Alan Partridge, we crash into another week with the erstwhile Ed Zed tucked under one arm to bring you another series of selections and banter as only we can. This week differs from usual shows, as Ed steps into Tom’s shoes to handle selection duties -- a situation brought about by Tom originally not planning to appear due to gigging commitments with Pama Int’l, only to have it cancelled due to a support slot with The Specials (Pama, not Tom -- he wishes!). So, with Ed stepping up with anything from classic Roxanne Shante to a highly obscure piece from Paul Simon (!), this is… well… much like our usual shows, really. We do also stride into the world of advertising as we force Ed to record a voiceover live on-air. The fame! The fame!!

Tracklisting:
Jaga Jazzist -- One-Armed Bandit
Moog Plays The Beatles -- Daytripper
Konk -- Love Attack
[unknown tune submitted by Craig Leckie - any ideas, please let us know]
Flaming Lips -- Convinced Of The Hex
Roxanne Shante -- Brothers Ain’t Shit
BlakRoc -- Ain’t Nothin’ Like You (Hoochie Coo)
Jerry Landis -- The Lone Teen Ranger
Thunderheist -- Little Booty Girl (Lunice RMX)
Golden Earring -- Kill Me Ce Soir

Featured video this week was going to be this rather excellent Richard Edson showreel, but sadly we can’t embed it on this site. So, in its place is Ed’s Golden Earring selection, as it got cut slightly short and is rather ace:

TheBeatless… AKA “The Beatless Special”. Given both myself and Tom are very rhythm-driven in terms of tracks we love -- or rather, appreciative of the power of a killer beat -- we thought it might be interesting to try a theme special where none of the tracks had beats at all. Well, that was the initial plan, though as you’ll hear something may have been lost in translation resulting in one or two tracks creeping in sporting percussive qualities at best and a bloody huge drum beat at worst (take a bow Ed Zed)…

So, with the Beatles/Beatless puns out the way and joined by our compadre Mr Ed Zed, we sidestep numerous technical disasters including the Resonance CD decks collectively refusing to play Melvins’ “Colossus of Destiny” (a wise move, many might argue) and press on with a series of selections that we hoped might go beyond your obvious choices to deliver something a bit more interesting. Did we succeed? Well, we shall leave that to you to decide, but if the tracklisting might sway you, here it is…

Tracklisting:
Pigbag “The backside”
Grinderman “Grinderman”
Inflatable Boy Clams “I’m Sorry”
Sigue Sigue Sputnik “Atari Baby”
Xela “Creeping Flesh”
Hightower Set “Putting Heads To Bed”
Stephen Duffy “Wednesday Jones”
Morphine “In Spite Of Me”
Social Climbers “Hello Texas”
Galliano “Roofing Tiles (Instrumental)”

As mentioned above, the soundbed was meant to be Melvins’ “Colossus of Destiny” album/track, but thanks to technical hell turned out to be “O Berimbau” by Nana Vasconcelos.

Featured video this week is a peach of a selection by Tom -- a slightly random clip of Martin Degville from Sigue Sigue Sputnik forcing some German TV presenter to dress up SSS-style:

lorraine-art… AKA “the one for our Mums”. This week we decided to step up with a fair spread of tracks taking in anything from the 90s loveliness of Girls Against Boys to the Gloria Estefan-toting Lindstrøm & Christabelle. We also feature two of Tom’s worst selections ever, namely bogle covers of Bette Midler and Bryan Adams. No, seriously. On top of that we have the sublime stylings of Lorraine Ellison, the Coltrane-covering Red Holt and, despite protestations, the annual revisit of Meshuggah -- an airing best summed up by the message we received during the show from listener Jesscapeshop via Twitter: “somehow a year between airings doesn’t seem quite long enough”…

So, as ever, grab your cognac, settle into your oxblood leather armchair, put those slipper-covered feet up on the coffee table and join us as we reprise the Camden Lurch for the next 60 minutes…

Tracklisting:
Girls Against Boys “In Like Flynn”
Lindstrøm & Christabelle “Baby Don’t Stop (Aeroplane Remix)”
Lindstrøm & Christabelle “Baby Don’t Stop (Radio Edit)” (snippet)
Lorraine Ellison “Stay With Me Baby”
Mark Holder “Wind Beneath My Wings” (snippet)
Singing Sweet “Everything I Do (Bogle Lick)” (snippet)
Hot Chip “Tchaparian”
Shrag “Hopelessly Wasted”
Red Holt “Favourite Things”
Meshuggah “New Millenium Cyanide Christ”
Paddy Roberts “The Big Dee Jay”

The soundbed this week was Andrew Weatherall’s remix of Weekender. RIP Liam.

ExpressionsAfter the train-wreck of last week’s show when both myself and Tom were rendered dumb and mumbling thanks to too much work and no goddamn sleep, we were keen to make amends this week with some fine selections and a better line in chatter too.

With yours truly fresh from a fine day out at the Jukebox Madness record fair, 45s were high on the agenda, taking in anything from the mighty, marvellous vocal harmonies of Johnny and the Expressions to the rather bizarre 80s rap moments of Dr. John. Tom’s contributions took in something of a synth theme, loosely tying Holger Hiller, Restiform Bodies and even Wilson Pickett into the mix…

Tracklisting:
J.D Alex “Grasshopper”
Johnny and the Expressions “Something I Want To Tell You”
Wilson Pickett “Don’t Knock My Love (Part II)”
Dr. John “Jet Set”
Holger Hiller “Neighbours (Demixed by Steve)”
Richard Hawley “Open Up Your Door”
Restiform Bodies “Recycle America”
Scritti Politti “Flesh and Blood”

The soundbed was various tracks from the new Alberta Cross album.

ManSorry. Sorry sorry sorry…

Every once in a while we have an off night (hey! stop that at the back…) and this was one such fine instance where the planets align, all the pieces fall into place… and we have just about everything go wrong.

Of course cock-ups are fun (at which point we should mention the naked man cover courtesy of Man… sorry), so we’re confident this should prove a fine listen, albeit potentially for the wrong reasons. In our defence though, the tracks selected are top dollar, including Nigerian disco from the dubiously named Dr Adolf Aonotu, Roots Manuva-led dancehall courtey of Breakage and possibly the worst-named band in living memory: Bloody Beetroots…

Tracklisting:
Dr. Adolf Aonotu “Ijere”
Gougoush “I Believe In Love”
Mat Young “Indica”
Jetpak “An Elderly Game”
Bloody Beetroots feat Cool Kids “Awesome”
Breakage “Run Em Out”
Junior Ross and the Spears “Say Jah Jah Say (Mr Trick version)”
Kathy Smith “Topanga”
Joe Higgs “Journey To Freedom”

and the sound-bed would’ve been “The Alchemist” by Man
