In 2009 Mr Trick and Wrongtom, radio broadcasters of repute, had it all. Their show had been running on London’s Resonance FM for over a year, building a strong fanbase and winning many a loyal listener from as far afield as Copenhagen (Denmark), Portland (USA) and even Hull (somewhere up north). As they passed their 60th show, they had the world – or at least a small part of the area around Borough Market – at their feet.
Then, disaster struck. Fearing an uprising of their more leftfield broadcasters, Resonance abruptly terminated Trick and Tom’s spot, and they were left showless. As 2009 turned into 2010, both presenters disappeared and nothing was heard of them again.

Until now.

Early this year, Wire and Guardian scribe Joe Muggs tracked the pair down to a small corner of Soho. Trick had sold his record collection and, in sheer desperation, was forced to take a job in the music industry. Tom refused to confirm rumours that he’d buried his prized records under Waterloo Bridge, but did admit that he’d remixed records for food.

Taking pity on the pair, Joe made some calls to see what could be done. A studio was cobbled together and clothes legends Fly53 stepped in to support the beleaguered presenters before they descended into a vortex of White Lightning and Happy Shopper tea.

Cut to the present, and Mr Trick and Wrongtom are back. Resplendent in a new Soho studio just two doors from notable local emporium Spankarama, they will hit the internet’s airwaves on Wednesday, August 31st at 7pm with a new weekly show and podcast entitled, amazingly “Mr Trick and Wrongtom (on your radio)”, promising to remain true to the format that made them successful. “This is a show about being a music fan; about hearing those glorious curveballs that blow your mind and the stories around them. Its not about hearing things you know – its about hearing music you’ve never heard of and wanting to know more about it immediately”, says Trick.

To listen to the show, head to www.mrtrickandwrongtom.com. You can also listen live via Ustream via browser, iPhone, Android etc. If you’ve been hit by a bus or can’t listen live for any other reason, the show will also be podcast and uploaded to Mixcloud. All links will be on the website.

Either way, this means that the show we’d prepared for tonight will not now happen.

Personally, I’m gutted; having missed the final two shows of the year in December through illness, and then having to cancel last week’s show because we were snowed in, I was beyond excited to be getting back on air tonight. We love doing this show and particularly hearing from all our listeners – even when they’re telling us to shut up and move on, or stop playing Meshuggah. Again. Having gained a somewhat sturdy following that reached as far as Portland Oregon (yes Jen – that means you!), we felt we were onto something.

For now though, we would only ask one thing of you: if you would like to see us back on-air, please do drop Ed Baxter, the station manager for Resonance FM, a polite email enquiring why the show is no longer on-air. Please don’t get abusive; that won’t help us – quite the opposite. We just feel this should be positive: if you want the show back, let ‘em know and maybe they’ll reconsider the situation. And then it snowed.

A lot.

And, true to British form, the world ground to a halt.

So sadly tonight’s show is cancelled, much to our frustration. Back in the Days Of Yore™, in the event of a power outage, a band would spontaneously jam in the dark, determined to entertain the fans. Well, with the lights going out on our show this evening Tom has stepped forward with his own busking skills for your delectation… if by “busking” we mean “rare, unreleased remix with an uncannily coincidental title given the snowy weather”.

This is actually (according to Tom) his first reggae production as Stoneleigh Mountain Rockers, dating back to about 2005. While the vocal version saw the light of day, this one did not. So, re-light your pipe, pinch up your twills and sit down to enjoy a fine slice of our Wrongest one in action…

If you’re familiar with the format already, you’ll know we wont be rolling out the usual festive favourites but we can assure a cavalcade of curious Christmas records which in the past have covered anything from sleigh bell drenched Hawaiian hits to William Burroughs growling about heroine abuse on a cold winter night. Joining us for the party will be our irregular regular guest Ed Zed and as it’s our last show before Resonance breaks up for the Christmas hols we’ll no doubt be bringing in games, busting out the egg nog and oh shucks just tune in on the 16th to find out.

That’s just the icing on the brandy drenched cake though as we’ve got another special show this week in the shape of a Noughties run down. Yes, I’m well aware that we didn’t start at the year “0″ but if we did gauge the decade from zero then surely 1980 would’ve been in the “the 70′s”? Really though, does it matter? It’s simply another opportunity for us to cobble together a bunch of unrelated music with the ruse that it somehow ties together (let’s just hope our selections are marginally better than the name of the decade). Anyway as I said to my mum when I was told not to huff lighter fluid “everyone else is doing it so why can’t we?” So that’s this Wednesday at 10pm GMT  for the rundown and next Wednesday at the same time for the Yule rulers, and don’t forget we’re off for a couple of weeks but we’ll be back on January 6th.

Having finally been forced into the world of Apple thanks to a work iPhone, I couldn’t resist having a quick check on the Trick and Tom podcast page, where I saw the above rather kind words from Richey W and Bizzyfingers (who, alarmingly, are not known to us, making this something of a bizarre moment). So, in my first act of gratuitous begging, I thought I’d ask any of you iTunes listeners to also leave a comment or two. As ever the outline is a vague one and we can assure you that the selections will go a long way beyond the obvious acoustic sing-a-longs and ambient whale songs such a theme may suggest.

I don’t want to give too much away but a couple of drummer alternatives I’ve uncovered in the process included a tap dancer and a wok, and to balance things out we’ve coerced our part time glam-rock drumming associate Ed Zed to rattle your speakers with his buffeting baritone.

It’ll be party hats all round as we celebrate with a pre 1959 theme to the music selection, we were considering selecting some of our favourites from the last 49 shows but then figured we’d be robbing the podcasters amongst you so instead we’ve been dusting off the doo wop, having it to hard bop and applying our usual style of musical paths less traveled to an era which we’ve largely overlooked ourselves.

The fruit punch will be flowing, parcels will be passed, and this may be the first time anyone’s played musical chairs to Sun Ra, tune in at 10pm.

Trick will no doubt be packing up the wagon and taking the whole family across country to marvel at an imaginary moose (ok i know the John Hughes special was last week but I couldn’t resist), while I’ll be rolling up my jeans, tying a hanky to my head and hitting the A12 for some glorious Essex coastal action with Modern Romance’s greatest hits on my walkman for the full British Summertime experience.

If you do happen to be near your wireless and for some ridiculous reason never listened to our Bill Brewster special a few months back then we’ll be re-airing the show in all it’s glory as ever tonight at 10pm.

As for next week there’ll be something quite different. I can’t tell you what exactly just yet but let’s just say we’ll be taking the current trend for extended re-edits to it’s (il)logical extreme. Tune in at 10pm GMT on the 26th to find out more.
