Show ditched by Resonance: click here to read more…

safety-artIt would seem that by design or by oversight the Mr Trick & Wrongtom Show has been summarily dropped from the Resonance FM schedule. Sadly, the first we learned of this was when someone forwarded us a newsletter they’d received from the show replacing us; nobody from the station has contacted us and hence we’re still none the wiser as to whether this is some kind of mistake on the station’s part, or a case of “we thought we’d rest you – did nobody tell you??”.

Either way, this means that the show we’d prepared for tonight will not now happen.

Personally, I’m gutted; having missed the final two shows of the year in December through illness, and then having to cancel last week’s show because we were snowed in, I was beyond excited to be getting back on air tonight. We love doing this show and particularly hearing from all our listeners – even when they’re telling us to shut up and move on, or stop playing Meshuggah. Again. Having gained a somewhat sturdy following that reached as far as Portland Oregon (yes Jen – that means you!), we felt we were onto something.

For now though, we would only ask one thing of you: if you would like to see us back on-air, please do drop Ed Baxter, the station manager for Resonance FM, a polite email enquiring why the show is no longer on-air. Please don’t get abusive; that won’t help us – quite the opposite. We just feel this should be positive: if you want the show back, let ‘em know and maybe they’ll reconsider the situation. You can email Ed on ed@resonancefm.com

Alternatively, if you’re a radio station looking for two presenters… drop us a line!

here’s to the future – er, preferably one where we are still on air somewhere ;-)

all the best

Snow joke, I tells ya…

Snow_Fuck_WinterWell, we aren’t going to lie: after the rather damp squib of a close to 2009 with me off sick for the last two shows of the year, we were all pumped up and ready for our EXPLOSIVE* return to the airwaves tonight.

And then it snowed.

A lot.

And, true to British form, the world ground to a halt.

So sadly tonight’s show is cancelled, much to our frustration. Back in the Days Of Yore™, in the event of a power outage, a band would spontaneously jam in the dark, determined to entertain the fans. Well, with the lights going out on our show this evening Tom has stepped forward with his own busking skills for your delectation… if by “busking” we mean “rare, unreleased remix with an uncannily coincidental title given the snowy weather”.

This is actually (according to Tom) his first reggae production as Stoneleigh Mountain Rockers, dating back to about 2005. While the vocal version saw the light of day, this one did not. So, re-light your pipe, pinch up your twills and sit down to enjoy a fine slice of our Wrongest one in action…

We will be back next week on pain of death with our first show of 2010. Until then, Tom will be out back making a snowman effigy of Kid Creole and I shall be using this as an excuse to drink brandy and muse on my Hendrix bootleg collection. See you on the other side people!

*note by “explosive” we mean “reasonably energetic”

And there wont be snow in Resonance this Xmas…

stormsantaWell I’ve just got off the blower with Mr Trick who’s still in the throws of some dastardly sickness, leaving him sounding like he should be doing voice overs for horror trailers rather than present a show of seasonal sundries. We’re therefore sorry to inform you that tonight’s Christmas special has been canceled, however Trick’s on the case making sure they air one of our previous yuletide podcasts from yesteryear so tune in at 10pm GMT with your humbugs in hand and you will soon be visited by the ghosts of Trick & Tom past.

Of course if you normally podcast the show and you somehow missed them…

santaIs it that time of year again already – where does the time go? I guess we’ve just been having too much fun this year what with Resonance letting us go weekly but we haven’t lost sight of why we started this show and we’re not ones to turn our back on tradition, so as sure as the BFI will be screening It’s A Wonderful Life, we’re gearing up for another Christmas special.

If you’re familiar with the format already, you’ll know we wont be rolling out the usual festive favourites but we can assure a cavalcade of curious Christmas records which in the past have covered anything from sleigh bell drenched Hawaiian hits to William Burroughs growling about heroine abuse on a cold winter night. Joining us for the party will be our irregular regular guest Ed Zed and as it’s our last show before Resonance breaks up for the Christmas hols we’ll no doubt be bringing in games, busting out the egg nog and oh shucks just tune in on the 16th to find out.

That’s just the icing on the brandy drenched cake though as we’ve got another special show this week in the shape of a Noughties run down. Yes, I’m well aware that we didn’t start at the year “0″ but if we did gauge the decade from zero then surely 1980 would’ve been in the “the 70’s”? Really though, does it matter? It’s simply another opportunity for us to cobble together a bunch of unrelated music with the ruse that it somehow ties together (let’s just hope our selections are marginally better than the name of the decade). Anyway as I said to my mum when I was told not to huff lighter fluid “everyone else is doing it so why can’t we?” So that’s this Wednesday at 10pm GMT  for the rundown and next Wednesday at the same time for the Yule rulers, and don’t forget we’re off for a couple of weeks but we’ll be back on January 6th.

Fancy leaving a comment for us over on iTunes?

podcast-love

Having finally been forced into the world of Apple thanks to a work iPhone, I couldn’t resist having a quick check on the Trick and Tom podcast page, where I saw the above rather kind words from Richey W and Bizzyfingers (who, alarmingly, are not known to us, making this something of a bizarre moment). So, in my first act of gratuitous begging, I thought I’d ask any of you iTunes listeners to also leave a comment or two. The more nice comments we get, the more coverage we might get by iTunes, which is no bad thing.

So, if YOU would like to leave a comment, please click here to launch our page on iTunes and drop a comment on there. In return we will owe you a beer*

Cheers,

Mr Trick

This month’s theme show: The beatless special.

Ringo Starr pictured in his pyjamas in hospital eating a meal. TNope that’s not a typo, I did say ‘beatless’ and yes that’s a Beatle to the left but given this coming Wednesdays theme show is a drumless one, the visual pun shouldn’t be too difficult to decipher.

As ever the outline is a vague one and we can assure you that the selections will go a long way beyond the obvious acoustic sing-a-longs and ambient whale songs such a theme may suggest.

I don’t want to give too much away but a couple of drummer alternatives I’ve uncovered in the process included a tap dancer and a wok, and to balance things out we’ve coerced our part time glam-rock drumming associate Ed Zed to rattle your speakers with his buffeting baritone.

Tune in tomorrow night, usual time, usual place.

Fifty!

50_73rIt’s a special day for us at Trick & Tom HQ as we’ve reached our half centenary – our 50th show hits the airwaves tonight and we decided to mark this special occasion with a live studio audience.

It’ll be party hats all round as we celebrate with a pre 1959 theme to the music selection, we were considering selecting some of our favourites from the last 49 shows but then figured we’d be robbing the podcasters amongst you so instead we’ve been dusting off the doo wop, having it to hard bop and applying our usual style of musical paths less traveled to an era which we’ve largely overlooked ourselves.

The fruit punch will be flowing, parcels will be passed, and this may be the first time anyone’s played musical chairs to Sun Ra, tune in at 10pm.

We’re on our hols for the next 2 weeks.

summer-holidayIt can be tiresome work being a radio star, you know, putting on records, taking off records, talking etc but thankfully Resonance FM blessed our weary ears with the magic words “studio closed for 2 weeks”.

Trick will no doubt be packing up the wagon and taking the whole family across country to marvel at an imaginary moose (ok i know the John Hughes special was last week but I couldn’t resist), while I’ll be rolling up my jeans, tying a hanky to my head and hitting the A12 for some glorious Essex coastal action with Modern Romance’s greatest hits on my walkman for the full British Summertime experience.

If you do happen to be near your wireless and for some ridiculous reason never listened to our Bill Brewster special a few months back then we’ll be re-airing the show in all it’s glory as ever tonight at 10pm.

As for next week there’ll be something quite different. I can’t tell you what exactly just yet but let’s just say we’ll be taking the current trend for extended re-edits to it’s (il)logical extreme. Tune in at 10pm GMT on the 26th to find out more.

We’ll be back live on September 2nd, so til then…

Don’t you forget about John.

Director_John_Hughes(1)We were both pretty stunned by the sad news of John Hughes’ passing yesterday, as were no doubt hordes of others who’s difficult adolescent years were somehow reflected in a spate of pastel heavy cinematic paens to pubescent heartache. While the 50’s marked the dawning of teen culture, the 80’s gave a voice to their angst and very few captured it on screen better than Hughes, who gave hope to gawky computer geeks, fashion freaks and overzealous jocks alike.

We may have shied away from joining the ranks with yet another tribute to Jacko but we couldn’t let this one pass without a dedicated show covering some of the music which propelled classics like 16 Candles, Pretty In Pink, and soundtracked those moments when you got your 1st car and felt like you were cruising in Cameron’s dad’s Ferrari despite it actually being previously your mum’s clapped out Mini.

You can trust we’ll be doing more than simply scraping the surface and we wont feel the need to play any Simple Minds but from one brief chat we came up with a stack of tracks which we’d almost forgotten about, assuming you had too, then you’re definitely in for a treat.

Tune in this coming Wednesday (12th) at 10pm GMT.

This Wednesday’s theme show: The Shock Of The New.

shock_1We’re keeping things simple for this month’s special, the brief was a no-brainer – records which came out this year, the more recent the better. A wild idea I know but with thousands upon thousands of old tracks between us and a mutual hatred for functional remix drenched promos, this hasn’t been the easy task I originally envisioned.

Of course we could easily show up with a load of blog-friendly dancefloor tracks or any number of promos which open with “blah blah blah Detroit blah blah blah” but maybe, just maybe, there’s still a wealth of new material which defies the norm, waves two fingers at the current cognoscenti and begs the question “why aren’t they playing this on daytime radio?”

Wishful thinking as ever, we can but dream…
