This week we divide the show into two halves, just to keep things interesting. Tom helms part one with an overview of Cliff Martinez, the former Chili Pepper and Magic Band member turned film composer. Part Two sees Trick paying respects back to the Irish music and the Hard Working Class Heroes event in Dublin with a selection of tracks from there, covering the electronic pop of Tieranniesaur, the indie disco lushness of Little X’s For Eyes, the hypercompression of Moths and the head-nodding grooves of Toby Kaar. Ireland, this one’s for you!
[..]With Tom in The Netherlands, Dan le Sac steps up to join Trick for more of the usual. Taking in bizarre covers of funk classics, deep soul, murder ballads, Dirty South hiphop and more, the show was rolling along beautifully… right up until a catastrophic technical crapout brought the kibosh down on things a little early. All is good now though, so hit “play” and enjoy the usual ranty banter. Go!
[..]This week we’re joined by friend of the show and host of The Divine Chord Gospel Show, Greg Belson, who, we can’t deny, raises the standards no end with a selection of rare 45s that blew our mind. And we say rare, we ain’t lying: one of them is only one of nine in existence – and GODDAMN IT IS GOOD. Stellar lost funk and gospel are on the cards here and every one is simply sublime. Take a listen to hear what we mean – then go check Greg’s own show where you’ll find all these and more…
[..]This week we delve into the world of Bass music, dropping Pink Panther theme, Ghettotech soulfulness, easily the daftest Miami Bass track Trick’s ever heard and a curiously brilliant UK track from Rudi Zygadlo. In addition we visit a classic from the Ze catalogue, a ska shaving advert, choral music played by a sex tourist (or at least a man who looks a bit like one) and argue over afro-rock…
[..]This week we veer from the Cumbia sound of Colombia’s caribbean coast to the Ealing-made post-punk DIYness of Celebration via a former Digable Planet and the pairing of drugs hoovers Ministry with straight-edge, Fugazi legend Ian MacKaye. Much talk this time around, taking in the Loudness Wars, the merits of Neil Young, the mis-pressings of Del Shannon and more… Take a listen!
