It would seem that by design or by oversight the Mr Trick & Wrongtom Show has been summarily dropped from the Resonance FM schedule. Sadly, the first we learned of this was when someone forwarded us a newsletter they’d received from the show replacing us; nobody from the station has contacted us and hence we’re still none the wiser as to whether this is some kind of mistake on the station’s part, or a case of “we thought we’d rest you – did nobody tell you??”.

Either way, this means that the show we’d prepared for tonight will not now happen.

Personally, I’m gutted; having missed the final two shows of the year in December through illness, and then having to cancel last week’s show because we were snowed in, I was beyond excited to be getting back on air tonight. We love doing this show and particularly hearing from all our listeners – even when they’re telling us to shut up and move on, or stop playing Meshuggah. Again. Having gained a somewhat sturdy following that reached as far as Portland Oregon (yes Jen – that means you!), we felt we were onto something.

For now though, we would only ask one thing of you: if you would like to see us back on-air, please do drop Ed Baxter, the station manager for Resonance FM, a polite email enquiring why the show is no longer on-air. Please don’t get abusive; that won’t help us – quite the opposite. We just feel this should be positive: if you want the show back, let ‘em know and maybe they’ll reconsider the situation. Alternatively, if you’re a radio station looking for two presenters… drop us a line!

Snow joke, I tells ya…

Well, we aren’t going to lie: after the rather damp squib of a close to 2009 with me off sick for the last two shows of the year, we were all pumped up and ready for our EXPLOSIVE* return to the airwaves tonight.

And then it snowed.

A lot.

And, true to British form, the world ground to a halt.

So sadly tonight’s show is cancelled, much to our frustration. Back in the Days Of Yore™, in the event of a power outage, a band would spontaneously jam in the dark, determined to entertain the fans. Well, with the lights going out on our show this evening Tom has stepped forward with his own busking skills for your delectation… if by “busking” we mean “rare, unreleased remix with an uncannily coincidental title given the snowy weather”.

This is actually (according to Tom) his first reggae production as Stoneleigh Mountain Rockers, dating back to about 2005. While the vocal version saw the light of day, this one did not. So, re-light your pipe, pinch up your twills and sit down to enjoy a fine slice of our Wrongest one in action…

With Trick suddenly bed ridden with a vicious case of the sniffles, the original plan for a decade rundown show was scuppered. Fortunately all was not lost as Santa’s little helper dropped by in the shape of our irregular regular Ed Zed who suggested a last minute ’spiky dread’ special. Cue a deluge of dub and reggae music made by punks and new wavers, all giving their unique twist to the scruffy skank.

It may sound like a one trick pony of a show but we can assure you that this is no less varied than our usual fare. From the mechanical skank of Basement 5 to the Danish distortion drenched Sods, Ed & Tom prove that punks knew a thing or two about the one drop, the three foot skank and doing the rocksteady.

Plus there’s more of the same idle chit chat, erroneous facts (replace “Thomas Dolby” with “Howard Jones” when listening) and shameless self promotion, not to mention possibly one of the best band names we’ve aired yet in the shape of I-Jog and the Tracksuits.

It has come to our attention of late that our show’s live slot (Wednesdays, 10pm if you didn’t realise yet) mean that we compete with the TV vampire soft porn of True Blood. So, to combat this, Tom steps up this week with a variety soft porn-related selections covering anything from Emmanuelle’s more interesting moments (well, the soundtrack anyway) to the squeaky-bed conga-fest that is “Erotica: The Rhythms Of Love”.

Oh and Trick plays some music too… of no bearing to porn whatsoever. Hence the rather brutal opening from the Big Game Hunter himself, Mr Dibbs, newies from Lou Rhodes, The Irrepressibles and Beach House and the fine raw rock of Grifters -- a band Jack White was clearly listening to back in the early nineties…

Finally! Apologies all -- getting this show podcast has been a task akin to the Homer’s Odyssey, leading me to wonder if the spirits somewhere detected that this show May Contain Dubstep.

Yes, dubstep.

Alarmingly it was Tom’s turn this week to break out his inner Grumpy Old Man, with an inspired rant about the new Fourtet Joy Orbison remix which bears striking similarities to the broken beat scene led by Victor Duplaix among others. With a gentle track from Laura Veirs and a nod to the ‘Ardkore days with Lennie De Ice it amounts to the usual smorgasbord of wide focus music selection. You love it. Go get some.

It had to happen eventually. In fact I’m amazed it didn’t happen sooner. Yes, 59 shows in and FINALLY me and Tom both brought in the same track to air. What was the track? Jammer’s acid-friendly new one, “Party Animal”, which takes its place alongside the ever-reliable Maytals, Mr Chop reworking Pete Rock, Fulgeance on the remix and Les Crane being… well… flat out strange if I’m honest…

AKA “Moog & Willies”. With typical technical finesse and the professional presenting abilities of Alan Partridge, we crash into another week with the erstwhile Ed Zed tucked under one arm to bring you another series of selections and banter as only we can. This week differs from usual shows, as Ed steps into Tom’s shoes to handle selection duties -- a situation brought about by Tom originally not planning to appear due to gigging commitments with Pama Int’l, only to have it cancelled due to a support slot with The Specials (Pama, not Tom -- he wishes!). So, with Ed stepping up with anything from classic Roxanne Shante to a highly obscure piece from Paul Simon (!), this is… well… much like our usual shows, really. We do also stride into the world of advertising as we force Ed to record a voiceover live on-air. The fame! The fame!!

… AKA “The Beatless Special”. Given both myself and Tom are very rhythm-driven in terms of tracks we love -- or rather, appreciative of the power of a killer beat -- we thought it might be interesting to try a theme special where none of the tracks had beats at all. Well, that was the initial plan, though as you’ll hear something may have been lost in translation resulting in one or two tracks creeping in sporting percussive qualities at best and a bloody huge drum beat at worst (take a bow Ed Zed)…

So, with the Beatles/Beatless puns out the way and joined by our compadre Mr Ed Zed, we sidestep numerous technical disasters including the Resonance CD decks collectively refusing to play Melvins’ “Colossus of Destiny” (a wise move, many might argue) and press on with a series of selections that we hoped might go beyond your obvious choices to deliver something a bit more interesting. Did we succeed? Well, we shall leave that to you to decide, but if the tracklisting might sway you, here it is…
