Mr Trick & Wrongtom: Show #45 (July’09)

bloghouse-artAKA “The Shock Of The New”. Being the end of the month its Theme Special time again, and this week, what with Trick being fresh back from Disneyland (no, seriously), Tom suggested a simple theme: 100% new tracks. The idea was that this would be an easy one to manage… and of course it proved to be anything but…

However! Redemption was at hand, certainly for Trick when he discovered the awesome (and wholly slept-on) Phil and the Osophers, who single-handedly restored his faith in the DIY punk ethic. Factor in a re-appearance (in voice at least) from Ed Zed, a plethora of excellent communication from our listeners and a bunch of fine selections and this is, if we’re honest, possibly the best show since, er, last week. Get stuck in people!

Tracklisting:
Prefuse 73 -- “Relief Choir”
My Toys Like Me -- “Sweetheart”
Rambrandt -- “Alarm”
Tara Busch -- “This Love”
Discovery -- “Orange Shirt”
Phil and the Osophers -- “We Have All Summer”
Horace Andy -- “Watch We (Mr Benn Remix)”
Anti Pop Consortium -- “Apparently”

and the soundbed was another one of Paul White’s Strange Dreams: “Riding The Clouds”

shock_1We’re keeping things simple for this month’s special, the brief was a no-brainer – records which came out this year, the more recent the better. A wild idea I know but with thousands upon thousands of old tracks between us and a mutual hatred for functional remix drenched promos, this hasn’t been the easy task I originally envisioned.

Of course we could easily show up with a load of blog-friendly dancefloor tracks or any number of promos which open with “blah blah blah Detroit blah blah blah” but maybe, just maybe, there’s still a wealth of new material which defies the norm, waves two fingers at the current cognoscenti and begs the question “why aren’t they playing this on daytime radio?”

Wishful thinking as ever, we can but dream…

The TableWith Mr Trick Disneyland-bound on the Eurostar it was uncertain whether Tom would be able to maintain the usual standard of technical hiccups, spurious factoids and shameless name-drops but fortunately a young raconteur by the name of Ed Zed stepped in to assist. Cue a slew of synth heavy material from the arp-punk of San Fran’s Units to the alien-reggae odyssey of Harry J’s U.F.O, the sound of various drum kits being chucked down the stairs whether that be in the name of free jazz or outsider-garage or even a country torch-song lamenting the sorry demise of a puppy, yes despite Mr Trick’s absence this show won’t disappoint in the schizophrenic selection department.

Ed’s also not one to shy away from the microphone as he joined in with Tom’s aimless patter, discussing the birth of techno despite neither of them really knowing anything about it, paying tribute to a listener’s dead cat and of course shedding some light on what differentiates crap-punk from simply shit punk.

As for the technical side it was all being handled with an alarming panoply of professionalism, at least until the last few moments when the studio was suddenly shy one engineer, and for a show hosted by 2 guys who once met a member of the Zombies at the Muswell Hill festival (and donkey derby), this one’s somewhat light on the sycophancy, well it was til then anyway.

Harry J. Allstars “U.F.O.”
Units “High Pressure Days”
A Number Of Names “Sharevari”
Teddy & The Frat Girls “Club Nite”
Earl 16 “Batman & Robin”
The Stick Men “Set Back”
Betty Everett “You’re No Good”
The Revolutionary Ensemble “Ponderous Planets”
The Table “Do The Standing Still
Leyton Buzzards “Saturday Night Beneath The Plastic Palm Trees”

and the soundbed contained a few Soft Machine tracks including “Down The Road” “The German Lesson” and “The French Lesson”.

Here is the featured video for this week, which Ed explains: “it’s The Units Training Film *1 -- a ‘promotional’ short the band assembled in the early days which was often screened before or during their gigs at places like the Mabuhay Gardens and the Deaf Club”:

l_fdbe6c9e78add09de6d47b9d75e5054aThere comes a time in every radio personality’s career when you have to take time out from selecting records week in week out, and what could possibly lure away one half of this particular dynamic duo? Disneyland.

That’s right Mr Trick will be boarding the Eurostar to consort with Nazi sailor ducks and masonic mice (come on – he didn’t go raving in those white gloves) leaving me, a hardened technophobe to fend for myself in a sea of faders and condenser mics. Fortunately I wont be left to my own devices because I got on the blower as soon as I heard the devastating news and asked my old friend Ed Zed if he could fill Trick’s shoes for the evening.

Our regular listeners may be familiar with the name as some of my selections have come from nights I’ve spent huddled round Ed’s record player, in fact an evening round Mr Zed’s flat normally sounds much like one of our shows so we shouldn’t stray too far from the usual Trick & Tom format, all be it with a bit of extra “crap punk” which I stress is not the same as “shit punk.”

I could go into more detail but all you really need to know is there’s gonna be a load more material you probably wont have heard and you get to marvel at Ed’s sultry tones, also you can read a bit more about him here

Fist of FactsFirst up, our apologies for not getting this show online sooner, but thanks to my son, a knife and a memory card reader, our fine presenting talent was trapped on a card for a few days… £20 and one loud rant later and we’re good to go…

This week we gleefully stepped back up with our own selections to air, which included -- shock horror -- some new releases! Yes, Busdriver and Mos Def fulfil in that regard, as does Fist of Facts (technically, even if the track is 20+ years old). Ranting was set to “overdrive” this week -- listen to find out why!

Tracklisting:
Avalanche -- “You Know My Love”
Busdriver -- “Me Time”
Mos Def Ft. The Ruler -- “Auditorium”
Mr Dibbs -- “Ugly…”
Fist Of Facts -- “Fugitive Vesco”
Bugger Sod -- “Introducing The BS Crewe/Left… Right/Lord Giberick
and a snippet of Mack Attack -- “Let There Be Drums”

Soundbed: various songs sampled by RZA

Hogwash!

This is about as tenuous as our blog/show tie-ins can get; as you may have heard, Belson joined us on the show this week, a man known for uttering the words “get jiggy with the piggy” at his celebrated Hogwash sessions but I’m not here to discuss the virtues of a Stubblefield break, no today I want to raise awareness for the microscopic peril that is swine flu. Something which despite only making the news in the past few months seems to have been an issue for near on a quarter of a century.

Don’t worry, we haven’t donned the tin foil hats just yet, I simply wanted to link this up because the music in the second ad is downright awesome, not to mention the nonchalent news of Dotty’s demise. So stock up on kleenex and hit play…

Mr Trick & Wrongtom: Show #42 (July’09) with special guest Greg Belson

mongey, hogsy and tricky tarka (in reverse order)

While Bill Brewster bucked the worrying trend of not showing up to a Trick & Tom guest slot we couldn’t guarantee that others would follow suit, so when we asked Greg Belson to step up to the plate, the fact he lives thousands of miles from the Resonance studios may seem a little wishful thinking to some. Luckily Belson’s as reliable in that department as he is with his selections which you can now marvel at in all their podcasted glory.

There’s little to no chance of you recognizing even one of these records, all hand picked from some of the darkest dingiest digging spots in California, and no doubt if you’re familiar with our shtick then that’s exactly how you like it. We can’t promise you’ll find any of them in your local supermarket or hiding on a cheeky zshare link anywhere but we can tell you some solid gold’s been mined in thar hills, from the filthiest of funk to some sublime dancefloor gospel and Mr Belson will in no way disappoint.

As usual the careless banter runs thick and fast with Greg giving us the low down on the world of deep funk trading, sharing the tale behind dancefloor stormer “Silly Savage” and doing one of the greatest mock red-neck accents you’re likely to hear this side of Tom Hanks being shot in the buttocks.

Tracklisting:
Boris Gardner Happening -- Ghetto Funk [Leal]
Little Tiger -- Funky Fight [Geodol]
Rosa Lee Brooks -- Utee [Revis]
Walter Washington -- Mary Jane [Power]
Dynamic Disciples -- Satan [Purified]
Holy Disciples -- Trying To Make A Hundred [Songbird]
Christian Harmonizers -- Troubles of the World [Hummingbird]
Sammy Jones -- Cinderella Jones [Mascot]
Gene & The Team Beats -- I’ll Carry On [Leatherwood]
The Presidents -- Shoe Shine [Hollywood]
Dennis Brown -- A Little Bit More Loving

Soundbed: Hightower Set -- Moon Runner
