With plenty of time to prepare for this week’s show, you KNOW we were going to bring some broad but brilliant tunes for your delectation. So, kicking off with the insane Country & Western acid funk of Area Code 615, we then veer back into metal territory for the first time in a while with Justin Broadrick’s more obscure Sweet Tooth project before taking a change in format slightly by having Tom air three go-go tracks back to back from Tilt (aka Trouble Funk), Arkadion and The Junk Yard Band. Then its into tablist territory with the brilliant – and fully transcribed and notated – Antimatter from DJ Radar, back to the bovine dancefloor styles courtesy of The Magic Fly and finally down with some Hijack-sampling dub funk from Scottish hardcore merchants Dawson. Phew!
Tracklisting:
Area Code 615 – Scotland
Sweet Tooth – Fat City
Tilt – Arkade Funk
Arkadion – Torque
The Junk Yard Band – The Word
Radar – Antimatter
The Magic Fly – Two Planets feat. Ricky Ranking (Mr Benn Bambaclog Remix)
Dawson – Bodies Under The Floor
Soundbed: Zinc – Amazon

I keep forgetting to mention that our Spotify playlist has been updated (and is almost every week, depending on whether they actually have some of the stuff we play), and is now amounting to some 42 songs we’ve previously aired in one form or another.
BTW, a couple of people have commented that they’ve had issues opening the playlist. Unfortunately this is an issue at Spotify’s end and seems to be a wider one with playlists in general. If you do have trouble, just try again at some other point and it should load fine. Enjoy!
So there I was, knee deep in Roots Manuva versions, fingers bleeding from haphazard guitar scrubbing, and the sound of tape echo pinging through my head. Having broken my bass, accidentally dismantled a Moog and developed the reggae jitters it was time to kick back, and what better way to take a break from music production than to delve into more music? Maybe I should’ve run a steamy bath, lit some candles and enjoyed the blissful silence but having aired a few go-go records on last week’s show, Mr Trick had requested I put together an accompanying mix.
For those not familiar with the term, go-go is syncopated funk punctuated with call and response vocals and a battery of percussion which generally clocks in around the 90bpm mark. Invented by Chuck Brown back in the mid 70′s while he was doing the rounds of Washington DC’s soul clubs, he heard “Mr Magic” by the aptly named Grover Washington Jr and capitalized on the beat pattern, sacking and hiring an ever changing line up of his Soul Searchers til they sounded exactly how he wanted. You’d be forgiven for not being familiar with the sound, as aside a few anomalies, most go-go bands and their records never really took off outside of their native DC, however their legacy lives on primarily through Soul II Soul sampling “Ashley’s Roach Clip” by Chuck Brown on their often imitated “Back To Life.”
Pressed for time I opted for some of my favourite tracks rather than going for a comprehensive overview so there’s only actually 4 bands represented in this mix, if you take into account Tilt were supposedly members of Trouble Funk in a seldom seen electro go-go disguise, and Dr Funnkenstein happened to be a one off nom de plume of Dj Cash Money who turned his wandering hand to the go-go sound on chocolate city’s answer to Flash’s NYC adventures. There’s no fancy cutting and blending going on here, simply back to back tracks in an attempt to capture the kind of non-stop session you might hear at the go-go. Right, I’m off to break some more instruments…

Resonance FM will be closed all next week for essential maintenance, so there will consequently be no show from us now until the following Wednesday, June 24th. To compensate, we will be blogging a few more articles in lieu of a show, so do check in as usual for more goodies to check out…
Sometimes when posting these shows on line, even I find myself staring at the tracklisting and thinking “did we really play all that?”. I mean, look at it… Where else would you find glam twonks Kiss cosying up alongside former Moloko drummer Davide De Rose? Or west coast rappers DJ Quik & Kurupt alongside a lesser-known track from Lousiville post-rock godfathers Slint? My guess? Nowhere else.
This show had a few highlights, not least the look on Tom’s face on hearing “Mr Blackwell” from Kiss’s mythical/notorious/just-plain-shite* album “Music From The Elder”, so get listening to hear a customarily broad selection that even includes Jah Scouse. Yes, you read that right, Jah Scouse. Check the man himself on the back cover!
Tracklisting:
Floormaster Squeeze – Kick Out The James (Again)
DJ Quik & Kurupt – 9 Times Outta 10
Slint – Pat
The Smiths – Paint A Vulgar Picture
Sketchie – Salute To Alone
Dave De Rose – Dreams
Kiss – Mr Blackwell
Jah Scouse – Merge
Soundbed: Jungle Drums – Walk (inst.)

Featured video for this week is a fine one we found of Kiss attempting to play a track from “Music From The Elder” some 23 years later… and failing miserably. Worth watching entirely for the Aussie fans’ interjection at the end…
