Mr Trick & Wrongtom: Show #25 (February’09)

Dudders Its our last show of the month, which means its time to roll out our first THEMED SHOW. So what’s the theme this time? Easy: Celebrity songs.

Now, to clarify, the aim here was not to roll out William Shatner doing “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds” for the 100th time. No: we set ourselves a challenge to dig deep and find tracks that might, actually, possibly, be rather good. And, if you’ve ever combed the output of those celebritied greats, you’d know this is no mean feat.

So, who are we playing on this celebrity special? Well let’s not name names and ruin the surprise, but how about a celebrity food critic, a notorious former London madam? A world-renowned comedian? The calypso efforts of one of Hollywood’s greater actors?

As one fine messenger to the show put it: “you are giving me an education I never knew I wanted”. Quite.

g0001There were a number of pivotal moments which led to my love affair with scary movies, the crux being the moment my dad bought our first video player, a VHS top-loader by Fisher. In 1983 front loaders had begun to swamp the market but he assured us they were a gimmick and the top-loader would remain an industry standard, fortunately misjudged foresight didn’t phase my brother from picking out our first brace of films, Rocky III, Hercules In New York, both pillars of this improbable new world we’d discovered but the first which really grabbed me was Escape from New York. I could bang on all day about why I love it so but this brief soliloquy should suffice; during a music class in middle school, we were asked to sing a section of our favourite songs of the time, I imagine there were a few renditions of Karma Chameleon and Candy Girl but when it finally came to my turn, I sat stunned for a moment then launched into John Carpenter’s title music “DUUUM DUUUM DUM DUM” followed by a shady attempt at imitating a drum machine at the end of each bar. I was cut short almost instantly but it remains a proud defiant moment to this day. So this was it, big budgets and sweeping string sections were all well and good but muffled synths sound-tracking movies I’d have no chance of seeing at the cinema were something else entirely.

My mum turning a blind eye to a 9 year old watching an 18 rated film outlined the final watershed moment. Children of the Corn was instantly forgettable and not remotely scary but led to a slew of slasher/zombie/melt/demonoid gore-fests rolling over our Fisher’s ever dirty heads and onto our faux-mahogany covered TV. Bizarrely it was Christine where my mum finally drew the line which led to one of my greatest cinematic let downs, having spent about 4 years convinced it must be one of the most frightening films of all time. Inconsequentially Barefoot in the park remains my most chilling film experience simply because i watched it whilst riddled with flu and fell asleep half way through only to dream that it went from a timeless romcom to satanic bloodfeast in a matter of minutes; I still can’t look at robert redford without thinking of slain goats. I digress but it’s safe to say that without realising it I’d already been turned onto the work of Fabio Frizzi, Simonetti & Goblin before I’d even reached the tender age of 10 (check our featured video this week for some classic Frizzi/Fulci zombie synth action).

So why am I telling you all this? Well had you listened into to our previous show you’d have heard a snippet of the forthcoming “Euro Slash EP” by the horror obsessed Giallo’s Flame who’s name is more than a fleeting nod to the world of blood splattered Italian cinematic treats. Aside the fact that it’s simply a great record, it’s also comforting to know that fellow synthophiles and gore lovers are out there, probably with a similar experience to bore the rest of the world with. I’ve often been skeptical over the wealth of prefabricated tributes to yesteryear but there’s not a negative word I could apply to this slice of spine chilling aural terror which led me to invent a new dance known as “the cower behind the sofa.” The ever evolving 2600 recordings will be releasing this audio nasty on the world in April so until then check out the Giallo’s Flame myspace and keep repeating “IT’S ONLY A HOMAGE, IT’S ONLY A HOMAGE…

Kasso This week we delve into mid-80s US punk, bands paying tribute Italian horror composers, the music Italian horror composers do on their days off, the world of Bullion, the more out-there moments of the Fun Boy Three, the Super Furry Animals most manic moment, the fine funk of Chakachas (or Chaka Chas -- think eastend cockney Chaka Khan), the Stones Throw library music collection and more.

In addition, we attempt to find our most distant live listener (stand up Jenni in Portland!), discuss the merits of Hawaiian music, fight over just how much you can talk about drugs on air and, well… more of the same really!

Thanks to those that interacted with us via our Twitter feed -- if you missed out, tune in live next week to send us messages while we’re on air etc.

Remember: next week is our last show of the month, and therefore will be our Theme Show. The theme this month? Celebrity albums. You have been warned!

Linval Thompson At last – back on air! Yes, this week’s podcast was originally aired on Resonance 104.4FM last night, and if you missed it, boy you missed out. Having booted The Pogues’ Jem Finer out of the studio for over-running, the fustered duo took to the airwaves like rally drivers to…er… a canoe.

Music comes courtesy of Al Green, Mountain, St Etienne, Viv Stanshall, Yo Gabba Gabba, Dee Nasty and more. Along the way, we took in contributions from listeners including the revelation that we were on the stereo in a Jersey curryhouse (surely a career peak), suggestions for our studio email address and ohhhh so much more.

As you may also know, we had a live Twitter feed running during the show, with photos being posted and various other ramblings. To see it, click here, as there’s LP covers posted and more… (and if you’re checking this 3 months later, peel back to posts made 11th February).

Yes, after being annexed to the world of podcasting for some 6 months or more, we are finally returning to the FM airwaves in a weekly slot. Make a note people: Wednesdays, 10-11pm GMT, Resonance 104.4FM. Or, if you’re not in London, you can listen online via Resonance’s spiffy 128k MP3 streams over at www.resonancefm.com.

But that’s not all. Ohhh no. Given as how we’re LIVE on-air again, we’re bringing back a bit more audience interaction. So, if you want to text us while we’re on air, fire an SMS to us on 07948 428963. If for some reason you’re not in the UK, you might want to change that number to +447948 428963.

In addition, we’re ramping up the web interaction by opening our show’s Twitter account for business. From this we will be posting pics during the show (most likely of album artwork, but probably also of us arsing about/drinking tea/looking moody* too) but also checking for messages from you lovely listeners.

When does this all start? Only this coming Wednesday, the 11th! Make a note in your diary and tune in – trust us, hearing it live is so much better than the playback…

Speaking of which: for those of you concerned about downloading the shows, fear not – we will also be podcasting shows as usual, so if you cannot tune in for any reason, you can still download the show some 24 hours later, with the only difference being that you cannot interact and tell us what you’re thinking.

See you on air on Wednesday!

New site, new Facebook integration

The Death Star Welcome then to the all-new Mr Trick and Wrongtom site, where all of our shows are now residing and where all new ones will also be posted. Currently sporting an “under construction” theme in the vain of the Lando Calrissian-era Death Star (thanks for that one Tom!), we will be developing this into something marvellous as and when we 1) find the time and 2) find the talent for the job.

The keen-eyed among you will also have spotted that we now have Facebook integration on the site. In short, this means that if you have a Facebook account, you can log in over there on the right and comment using your Facebook ID. So, no registration required anymore, though if you’d rather not use your real name, you can also create a regular account as per usual and use that. Facebook comments can also be posted back to your news feed on your Facebook page; just check the box below your comment, or uncheck if you’d rather it didn’t appear there.

In addition, if you want to invite your Facebook friends to come listen to a show or whatever, you can do so just by clicking the button over on the right.

Facebook snazziness aside, we hope you like the new site and its extra elements like our Featured Video slot and hopefully (time allowing!) some reviews and other bits of interest.

Now – onto our other BIG news

Mr Trick & Wrongtom: Show #22 (February ‘09)

Could this be our finest show to date? The proof’s in the pudding, so step in a take a listen!

On this week’s show, our dynamic (*ahem*) duo, high on cups of tea and possibly a sly biscuit or two, roll out tracks covering the glossy, not-remotely-ironic 80s production of Tigercity, the dubstep-meets-ska of Jazz Steppers, arguably the all-time gay anthem of Man 2 Man feat. Man Parrish and the unassailable genius of the KLF’s awesome (and frankly bloody hilarious) “Whitney Joins The JAMs”.

Now, as some may be aware we record these shows in pairs, and this was the second one of our last session, done on the 27th January. So, it was with some sad irony that Trick opted to air the mighty John Martyn’s “Devil Get My Woman”, singing the man’s praises… only to get news from Tom 24hrs later that the big man himself had passed away at the age of 60. A sad loss indeed – but hey, let’s celebrate the man’s music as it rightly deserves.

As if all that isn’t enough, we also have the ragga-meets-Quo stylings of Elephant Man (no, seriously), the b-more stylings of KZ & Bullfro… er… Bulldog, and the minimalist brilliance of Plastikman’s “Consumed” LP.

Factor in chatter covering gay disco, pretending to be the KLF, the days when headless guitars were fashionable, Tom’s guilty infatuation with Lacey Turner, the campness of early 80s hip hop and much, much more… Get stuck in!
